Knowledge Management
What is Knowledge Management?
Knowledge management (KM) is a formalized program for collecting information and capturing knowledge and experience in a tangible, easily accessible and user-friendly format that can be managed and used over time.
The RMSAWWA/RMWEA KM Subcommittee was commissioned to ensure water and wastewater utilities conduct KM and employee retention efforts to ensure mission critical personnel have the knowledge and skills to operate effectively. The subcommittee is developing and promoting workshops and tools to help water and wastewater utilities share best practices and design organizational development projects around knowledge management.
Why Should Utilities Address Knowledge Management?
The National Perspective: American Water Works Association (AWWA) Subcommittee Report- Knowledge management for addressing workforce issues
“This AWWA Knowledge Management Subcommittee report represents one of the first attempts to identify best practices for using knowledge management (KM) in addressing workforce issues. KM is a major issue for water utilities as the workforce ages and significant numbers of key employees near retirement age.” (AWWA)
