Model Water Tower Competition

SATURDAY APRIL 21, 2012
Boulder, Colorado
High School students teamed with water utility managers and university students from across Boulder County and surrounding communities will compete for cash and prizes in the first annual Rocky Mountain Model Water Tower Competition. Teams will try their hands at building water towers on April 21, 2012 at the City of Boulder.
Each individual team will build a model that meets several engineering design parameters - mimicking skills that real life water professionals use at work. Judges will score the teams on five categories and the top three teams will receive prizes and cash rewards.
"I think it really gives kids ownership and some problem-solving skills that are really important whether or not they become water industry professionals," said Ari Copeland, Chair of the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Water Works Association (RMSAWWA) Youth Education and Outreach Committee. “Many of these students are never exposed to our industry and miss a chance to have a career that is very rewarding and gives back to the commutiy they live in everyday. Lastly, the contest tries to educate young people about our industry so they grow up being knowledgeable rate payers with an understanding of the true value of clean drinking water.”
